In 2013, The Last of Us was released unto the world, and was met with universal praise for its story and characters.

I was a thirteen year old at the time, with classmates who were equally as excited over The Last of Us and how its story was told. And like many thirteen year olds and their favourite piece of entertainment, I wanted to replicate that sensation.

Of course, my first writings were utter garbage, just as anyone's is.

But slowly, over the next few years, I grew my interest and abilities of expression with the written word.

I wrote more imaginative compositions; I took up Literature as my 'O Levels pure humanities; my friends and I tried our hand at a collaborative prose; and in 2015, I was shortlisted to attend the Creative Arts Programme Seminar. I was one of five students representing Xinmin Secondary, and learnt a lot over the four days of workshops and sessions.

It was because of this that I confidently joined and subsequently graduated from Singapore Polytechnic's Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media, and I haven't looked back since then.

Trust - Final Draft

Trust | a short film shot at Pinewood Studios
Roles: Writer, Director

Trust was a short film written, directed and edited in less than two weeks as part of BFI UK & Creative Media Skills (UK)'s two week film-based seminar in December 2019 for 11 Singaporean students.

I was incredibly fortunate to have the privilege of being shortlisted to attend this seminar, and was the writer and director for this short film — one of two that was produced in Pinewood Studios as part of the event.

You can see the full short here, along with a behind the scenes of the entire seminar trip here.

Sweet Dreams | a Meet-Cute short film
Roles: Writer, Cinematographer

Sweet Dreams was written by myself and a classmate, Elson, for a DTVM module assignment on 'meet-cute' scripts. A 'meet-cute' was defined as the first meeting of a future romantic couple, so to write this from the perspective of two guys was... interesting.

Our very dramatic synopsis is as follows: When one sleepy girl encounters a fluffy, white, forgotten jacket, one boy will step up (or, sit down) to the task of retrieving the lost goods... or get stuck trying.

The script was eventually shortlisted as one of four scripts, among a pool of twelve, to be produced into a short film. You can watch it here.

Power - Final Draft

Power | an original play
Roles: Writer, Director, Videographer

Power was my second original theatre piece, and my first contribution as a returning alumni in 2017 after my graduation from Xinmin. It was staged at Xinmin English Drama Club's annual Drama Night event in March 2017, with additional writing and direction by Marcus.

This play is an ensemble-heavy piece, speculating how an oridinary teenager would deal with having the power to stop time completely - in what ways does she still feel powerless?

The last few days of rehearsals for Power were documented, and the final rehearsal run is available for public viewing, as can be found here.

Extraordinarily Meh | an original teen web-series
Roles: Writer, Pitcher/Representative

Extraordinarily Meh is an ongoing and developing original web-series concept by DTVM students, and I was lucky enough to hop on board this project for a DTVM module assignment.

I initially joined the team of Meh as a presentor for a pitching session to industry veterans, but my involvement steadily increased as the concept picked up its pace - we redrafted the concept, and a teammate and I pitched it at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content's Ultimate Speed-Pitching competition, where we won a visit to the offices of Disney Singapore.

Next, we redrafted it even more and pitched it at the Beach House Pictures Workshop 2018, where it received 5/5 thumb ups from the panel.

Where the future of Extraordinarily Meh leads to is for anyone to say.
